BMA joins hands with the Department of Health and Bang Chak Nai to invite merchants in the Banthat Thong area to properly separate waste to create good health and a sustainable environment.

Mr. Pornphrom Vikitsreth, Advisor to the Governor of Bangkok and the first Chief Sustainability Officer of the BMA and Director of Pathumwan District, representatives of the Department of Health and Bangchak Company visited the area of Banthat Thong Road, Pathumwan District to join together in a public relations campaign to create awareness among shops and citizens in Banthat Thong area. Currently, more than 160 stores have begun separating and reusing cooking oil to reduce the use of fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It will make consumers have good health by eating food that doesn’t reuse frying oil as well as having income from selling used oil. Importantly, it is a joint effort to create a good environment by not throwing used oil into public areas.

Bangkok, together with the Department of Health and Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited, joins in campaigning for food business operators to not reuse frying oil to create safe food consumption options for the public. Used cooking oil can be sold to BSGF Company Limited, a company in the Bangchak Group, to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel) or SAF from used cooking oil. It can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation industry. Moreover, it promotes a network of safe food entrepreneurs, creating more confidence for consumers in the quality and nutritional value of the food they eat. In addition, used oil is separated and not thrown away with general waste and not thrown into public areas. It is in line with Bangkok’s no-dumping policy that encourages and invites citizens to separate garbage before sending it to Bangkok garbage collection trucks for proper disposal. In the first phase, people are asked for cooperation in separating waste into 2 types: food scraps and general waste. Food scraps will be used to make compost. The district collects and delivers waste to the solid waste disposal plant using Nut Biomechanical Technology for fermentation into gas to produce electricity. As for general waste, there will be a separation process to make RDF. Waste that cannot be recycled and cannot be burned will continue to be sent to landfill.
