Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has promised to increase locations where people can drop off their plastic bottles and milk cartons for recycling as safety gear for its workers.
Currently, Bangkokians can leave their recyclable waste at drop-off points at 50 district offices and at two city halls in Din Daeng and Phra Nakhon districts.
“Soon more drop-off points will be available at shopping malls, public parks and schools throughout the city to make recycling easier,” said Arit Srithong, deputy director of BMA’s Environmental Department on Thursday.
He said the effort is part of the “Bangkok Magic Hands” campaign that the city has been conducting in collaboration with a network of partners since July last year.
The campaign aims to collect plastic bottles and milk cartons to recycle into PPE suits with light-reflecting strips for BMA road sweepers, to increase safety while working.
So far, the campaign has collected over 8 tonnes of recyclable waste and has produced 720 PPE suits. The project aims to produce 1,000 suits by mid-2023.
Making one PPE suit requires a total of 42 PET bottles of 600 ml capacity, said Arit, adding that clear, opaque, flexible plastics as well as milk cartons are also usable.
