Drafting a regulation on scholarships for cash-strapped students
at BMA-supervised schools (no academic test required). Such additional
financial support on top of what the EEF has provided will ensure that children in
need have enough financial resources for living so they can avoid becoming dropouts
Promoting the rights and safety
of children in Bangkok
The BMA, in collaboration with government agencies, private
entities, civil society organizations, and youth groups, has advocated
Bangkok. The goal is to ensure all children in the capital receive respect
and protection, with their rights being upheld. In pursuit of this goal,
mechanisms have been developed and BMA staff at all levels across
Bangkok are engaged. Efforts focus on all children in the capital, as no
one will be left behind. From 2022 onwards, the BMA has carried out
several activities to promote children’s rights and safety. For example, it
gave 126,117 crash helmets to students at BMA-supervised schools. The
BMA has also allowed students at its schools to wear preferred hairstyles
as long as they are clean, enhance personality, and boost confidence.
Students, moreover, can wear their own choice of clothes to schools at
least once a week. Students are given a say on such rules. If students have
not yet received a scout uniform or received just parts of the uniform,
they may wear a student uniform on the day a scout outfit is required or
wear a plain scarf in place of a scout scarf.
Education that develops students as global citizens
To ensure BMA-supervised schools promote students’ thinking,
learning, and doing as quality citizens, the BMA has updated curriculums
in line with the global context. It has also fostered students’ analytical
thinking to pave the way for a better future in society. As a result, students
are taught to address sensitive issues such as gender equality and ethnicity.
The BMA has also equipped them with the skills needed to live in the
modern world including IT skills. Moreover, the BMA has piloted the
integration of global citizenship into core subjects through its collaboration
with South Korea’s Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International
Understanding (APCEIU). The collaboration covers budget provision,
exchanges of knowledge, and training grants for 60 teachers (three from
each of the 20 participating schools). Lecturers from Chulalongkorn
University’s Faculty of Education provided training and monitored results
in 2023. The BMA, moreover, has disseminated information on how
to comprehensively manage plastic waste in partnership with 4 non-
governmental organizations. The topic has been highlighted in classrooms
with students being encouraged to segregate waste and reuse resources
where possible. Following segregation, recyclable waste has been sold.
The BMA has now taught plastic waste management at 112 schools. In the
2024 academic year, the topic will be taught at 109 more schools along
with other meaningful subjects such as gender equality and ethnicity.
