Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is offering sewing classes with help from apparel maker Mc Group in a bid to boost career opportunities and reduce income disparity.
The 7th batch of “Mc Group’s Sewing Class” was kickstarted on Sunday by deputy Bangkok governor Sanon Wangsrangboon at Wat Tai Ratsadon Nimit School in Suan Luang.
Sanon said this was in line with governor Chadchart Sittipunt’s policy to ease economic problems by building cooperation between Bangkok agencies, private partners and communities.
So far, Mc Group has held six batches of classes in which students were given expert advice and lessons on clothes making. The company also used patterns designed by students and also gave some of them employment.
The classes include lessons on using and maintaining a sewing machine as well as making clothing items via lessons and hands-on practice. Sanon said these lessons will give people a chance to either start their own dressmaking business or work for Mc Group if they demonstrate skills required by the company.
On Sunday, Sanon also attended the “Young Savers” event, which the BMA held in collaboration with Origin Property Plc and other partners.
The deputy governor handed out Government Savings Bank passbooks and scholarships to students from Wat Tai school who had signed up. The project aims to promote saving habits and financial discipline among students.
City Hall volunteers and private partners also participated in improving the infrastructure and buildings at the school.
