On May 15, 2026, Mr. Sanon Wangsrangboon, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, officially launched a specialized field survey team at the Din Daeng District Office, marking a crucial expansion of the “Bangkok Zero Dropout” policy. This targeted initiative is designed to locate, track down, and reintegrate children who have fallen out of the formal schooling system, ensuring they receive equal educational opportunities. Deputy Governor Sanon acknowledged that retrieving these missing students represents one of the Education Department’s most complex challenges, as it requires navigating uncontrollable family dynamics and deeply entrenched socio-economic hurdles. Highlighting the urgency of the mission, he referenced global research showing that while the poorest families in developed nations can escape poverty through education in 4.5 generations, it takes an average of 11 generations in Thailand, underscoring education as the ultimate tool for breaking generational poverty.
The BMA’s broader efforts have already made substantial progress across the capital, successfully reducing the number of out-of-school children from a staggering 130,000 down to approximately 51,000, signaling that the overarching program is nearly halfway to completion. In Din Daeng District specifically, a total of 859 dropped-out children were initially identified. While local teams have successfully located and followed up with 61 individuals, a critical target group of 798 children remains missing from the system.
The newly deployed survey team will conduct rigorous fieldwork to collect demographic data and coordinate cross-sector welfare assistance. The BMA has set a strict deadline of June 10, 2026, to safely return these remaining 798 children to the classroom, a vital cutoff date that ensures they qualify for state education subsidies. Deputy Governor Sanon urged government agencies, local schools, and community networks to collaborate intensely, emphasizing that this mission transcends basic schooling by directly reshaping the long-term quality of life for Bangkok’s youth.
