BMA Launches “Asoke Model” to Upgrade Pedestrian Safety and Achieve Zero Road Casualties

On May 15, 2026, Mr. Wisanu Subsompon, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, alongside executives from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and key networks, including the Metropolitan Police Bureau and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), launched the “Asoke Model” initiative at Srinakharinwirot University (SWU). This pilot project aims to overhaul pedestrian safety along the heavily congested Asoke Montri Road, a major economic zone utilized daily by over 30,000 students and commuters. The overarching goal of the campaign is to achieve “zero accidents” and transform Bangkok into a truly walkable city.

The Asoke Model focuses on comprehensive infrastructure upgrades and “First-Mile/Last-Mile” connectivity. Key structural enhancements include push-button pedestrian traffic lights, raised crosswalks to naturally slow down speeding vehicles, and central pedestrian refuge islands on wider lanes. To actively prevent accidents, ThaiHealth has supplied “Red Flags” for pedestrians to raise as a warning signal to oncoming traffic while crossing. This initiative operates under the strict safety guidelines of “Stop, Look, Raise, Cross” for pedestrians, and “Slow, See, Stop” for motorists, with flag boxes already piloted at 15 high-risk zones near schools and hospitals across the city.

In addition to crosswalk safety, the BMA is modernizing public transit infrastructure to discourage personal vehicle reliance. The administration plans to install 500 “single-pole digital bus signage” across Bangkok by the end of 2026 to display real-time arrival and bus route network data. Furthermore, 600 existing bus stops in the inner city are being upgraded using a user-centric design approach, complemented by the expansion of the BMA Bike Sharing program and improved walkways along the Saen Saep Canal. The BMA intends to use the insights gained from the Asoke Model to scale up pedestrian safety nationwide.
