Bangkok Canal Revitalization: BMA Speeds Up Strategic Upgrades to Klong Prem Prachakon and Klong Saen Saep for 2027 Completion

On February 19, 2026, Mr. Narong Ruengsri, Permanent Secretary for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), conducted an extensive site inspection to accelerate the development of two of Bangkok’s most vital waterways, Klong Prem Prachakon and Klong Saen Saep. The Klong Prem Prachakon project, spanning 12 kilometers through Don Mueang and Lak Si districts, is a massive undertaking involving a reinforced concrete embankment and a collaborative housing initiative known as the Baan Mankong project. Currently 59% complete, the development aims to provide secure housing for canal-side communities while bolstering flood protection. Mr. Narong emphasized that while 23 communities have successfully integrated into the plan, district offices must continue negotiating with uncooperative residents to ensure the construction of an additional 2,000 meters of embankment by the end of 2026. Legal measures remain an option to keep the project on its 2027 completion timeline, which will eventually support expanded waterway transportation and tourism.

Simultaneously, the BMA is focusing on creating a seamless transit experience at Klong Saen Saep, specifically at the connection point between the Pratunam pier and Pathumwananurak Park. In collaboration with the Privy Purse Bureau, the Drainage and Sewerage Department is redesigning the embankment to blend into the park’s landscape, offering city dwellers a more aesthetic and convenient commute. To facilitate this, the Ratchathewi District Office has been instructed to clear commercial encroachments behind the Platinum Shopping Mall, paving the way for a new dike and public walkway. With the segment from Phan Fa Lilat Bridge to the Chaloem Mahanakhon Expressway now over 28% complete, these dual canal initiatives represent a major leap toward a cleaner, more navigable, and more resilient urban environment. By prioritizing both infrastructure and community welfare, the BMA is ensuring that Bangkok’s historic canals evolve into modern assets for the city’s future.
