BMA Ramps Up Climate Action: Governor Chadchart Drives Bangkok Toward a Low-Carbon Future

On February 19, 2026, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, underscored the city’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability by chairing the first meeting of the Steering Committee for the Implementation of the Bangkok Master Plan on Climate Change 2021–2030. With the decade-long sustainability roadmap now at its halfway point, the Governor emphasized that this is a critical juncture to evaluate progress, optimize efficiency, refine strategies, and accelerate the transition toward a low-carbon urban center. The meeting served as a critical review period to identify areas for improvement and celebrate the significant strides already made toward reducing the city’s environmental footprint. Governor Chadchart highlighted that continuous integrated cooperation across various agencies is the backbone of this mission, ensuring that climate adaptation and greenhouse gas reduction remain a top priority for the administration.

The latest reports reveal that Bangkok is well on its way to achieving its ambitious goals. The BMA aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 19%, or approximately 10.15 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, by 2030. Based on the 2018 inventory, emissions have already dropped from 43.73 million tons to 38.59 million tons as of 2022. This reduction of 5.14 million tons indicates that the city has already met 51% of its 2030 target. To sustain this momentum, the BMA is managing 130 projects for fiscal year 2026. These are categorized into 106 greenhouse gas reduction initiatives, focusing on transportation, energy, and green urban planning, and 24 projects dedicated to climate change adaptation. A vast majority of these projects are either completed or currently underway, reflecting a high level of operational success.

Internal accountability is also being strengthened through the expansion of the “Carbon Footprint for Organization” project. After a successful pilot in 50 district offices, where districts like Khlong San and Phra Nakhon were recognized for excellence, the BMA is scaling the program to cover 77 agencies by late 2026. This data-driven approach has identified waste disposal as a major emission source, with landfilling accounting for 78% of Scope 3 emissions. Furthermore, Bangkok is leveraging international expertise through the City-to-City Collaboration with Yokohama, Japan, and the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility, and Climate (TGC-EMC). These partnerships are advancing solar rooftop guides, electric vehicle integration in Low-Emission Zones, and energy-efficient building management at facilities like Taksin Hospital. Governor Chadchart concluded the meeting by urging all sectors to integrate these climate strategies into their core operations, ensuring a sustainable and livable future for all Bangkok residents.
