Deputy Governor Pornphrom Directs Cross-Agency Integration to Elevate Environmental Standards and Global Ties

On July 10, 2026, Mr. Pornphrom Vikitsreth, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, chaired a high-level strategic assembly to synchronize the operational frameworks of the Environment Department, the Health Department, and the International Affairs Office. Joined by BMA Deputy Permanent Secretary Dr. Lertluck Leelaruangsang and key department heads, the executive review aimed to dismantle institutional silos and accelerate both immediate and long-term municipal policies. To cultivate a greener capital, the Deputy Governor established an aggressive 100-day action plan for the Environment Department, directing them to fast-track air quality controls, greenhouse gas reductions, and climate adaptation strategies. Immediate milestones include surveying urban zones to plant 100,000 trees, expanding pet-friendly public parks, implementing urban heat mitigation systems, and substantially upgrading PM2.5 monitoring protocols.

A primary highlight of the session was the creation of a unified “Environmental Inspectors” mechanism to enforce municipal sanitation and urban order. Deputy Governor Pornphrom ordered the formulation of shared Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to seamlessly integrate the legal authorities of the Health, Environment, and City Law Enforcement departments. Under this consolidated inspectorate, localized district divisions will systematically tackle commercial waste and pest infestations. For instance, commercial business licensing will be leveraged to mandate that restaurants utilize secure, tightly covered bins rather than leaving plastic trash bags on public streets. Furthermore, the BMA is assessing legal adjustments to fast-track pollution containment, potentially lowering the threshold for declaring public nuisance zones from a continuous “red” air quality level to a continuous “orange” level. Concurrently, the administration is expanding its global footprint via the International Affairs Office. By advancing the “Friends of Bangkok” initiative and broadening sister-city alliances, the BMA aims to host prominent international conferences, coordinate cultural projects with foreign embassies, and attract sustainable green investments to the capital.
