BMA Inspects Wat Phikun Thong Canal to Address Polluted Water and Improve Community Infrastructure

On June 17, 2026, Ms. Kanokwan Siamlim, Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), led a site inspection at Wat Phikun Thong Canal in Bang Phlat District to follow up on local environmental and infrastructure complaints. Accompanied by Ms. Manita Rujasiri, Director of Bang Phlat District, and officials from the Drainage and Sewerage Department, the inspection aimed to address community concerns regarding severe water pollution and damaged access walkways. Investigations revealed that the canal’s polluted water and unpleasant odors were primarily caused by wastewater discharge from neighboring commercial entities and high-rise buildings, compounded by obstructed water flow due to the ongoing Thonburi Wastewater Collection and Treatment System project, which is slated for completion by the end of 2026. Additionally, the team identified peeling and deteriorated asphalt pavement along the community access roads that require urgent structural remediation.

To alleviate the residents’ immediate distress, the Deputy Permanent Secretary instructed the Bang Phlat District Office to coordinate closely with the Drainage and Sewerage Department and the construction contractor to expedite corrective actions. Immediate measures include dredging the Wat Phikun Thong Canal and its connecting ditches, alongside removing weeds and accumulated garbage to restore proper drainage efficiency and water flow. For long-term environmental sustainability, the BMA will conduct a comprehensive survey of both public and private areas along the canal to evaluate permanent engineering solutions, such as dam construction and the installation of integrated drainage pipes. Furthermore, repairs to the damaged community roads will be fast-tracked to ensure the safety, convenience, and overall quality of life for the local population.
