Bangkok Governor Applauds Ho Chi Minh City’s Administrative Expansion as Cities Forge New Strategic Pact

On April 3, 2026, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, welcomed a high-level delegation from Ho Chi Minh City at the Bangkok City Hall, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Vietnam. Led by Mr. Nguyen Loc Ha, First Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, the visit focused on deepening city-level cooperation across trade, environment, and urban safety. In a notable moment of the discussion, Governor Chadchart specifically congratulated Ho Chi Minh City on the successful expansion of its administrative boundaries. He emphasized that this territorial and jurisdictional growth presents a unique opportunity for Bangkok to learn from Vietnam’s experience in managing a larger, newly integrated urban area, shifting the focus from simple urban sprawl to sophisticated administrative management.

A central point of mutual interest was the high density of motorcycles that characterizes both metropolises. Governor Chadchart identified this shared reality as a primary area for collaborative research, seeking advice from Ho Chi Minh City on how to foster sustainable road safety in environments dominated by two-wheeled transportation. This technical exchange is intended to go beyond theory, aiming for practical safety standards that can be applied to both the “City of Angels” and its Vietnamese counterpart. Beyond the streets, the leaders discussed a wide-ranging economic agenda, including industrial linkages through the Thailand-Vietnam International Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC) and cross-city tourism strategies designed to revitalize the post-recovery economy.

The conversation also turned toward sustainability, with both cities agreeing to share best practices in green space management and the growing field of urban agriculture. Recognizing the golden jubilee of Thai-Vietnamese ties, Governor Chadchart expressed Bangkok’s enthusiastic support for hosting Vietnamese cultural exchange events, offering the city’s most prominent public spaces to showcase Vietnamese heritage and boost tourism. The meeting concluded with a traditional exchange of souvenirs, as Governor Chadchart presented the delegation with a set of Thai Benjarong porcelain plates. This gesture symbolized a commitment to a partnership that respects tradition while actively navigating the complexities of modern city governance and territorial expansion.
