Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has officially exceeded its ambitious goal of providing one million health checkups, a feat Deputy Governor Assoc. Prof. Tavida Kamolvej described as a vital step in strengthening the city’s public health at the “capillary” or grassroots level. As of March 24, 2026, over 1,002,629 individuals have been screened, representing a significant portion of the city’s registered and unregistered workforce. The BMA emphasizes that these are not merely superficial exams but high-quality diagnostic packages, comparable to expensive private hospital offerings, including cancer screenings, chest X-rays, and detailed blood analyses. To make these services accessible, mobile units were strategically placed in markets and shopping malls during “residents’ hours,” often starting before malls officially opened to ensure workers could be seen within a strict two-hour window. This proactive approach has already proven life-saving, identifying critical, previously undiagnosed conditions such as retinal detachments and severe respiratory issues in unsuspecting citizens who felt healthy until their screening.
The success of the initiative has now evolved into a massive “Big Data” repository, allowing the BMA to map health trends across different districts with unprecedented precision. For instance, statistics showing high rates of obesity or localized lung diseases will now trigger targeted environmental policies and health campaigns tailored to the specific needs of each neighborhood, such as addressing air pollution in high-risk zones. Furthermore, all BMA-affiliated hospitals are set to open “BKK Wellness Clinics” to provide annual follow-up care and longitudinal health analysis. This digital integration, supported by the BMA Doctor app and high-level data security, ensures that patient information is seamlessly linked with nearly 9,000 primary care units and pharmacies. What began as a BMA-funded project has gained national momentum, with the National Health Security Office (NHSO) now providing additional funding to standardize this high-quality checkup package across all hospitals. Deputy Governor Tavida reaffirmed that the city will not stop at a million, but will continue to treat every resident, regardless of their registration status, as a key mechanism of the city’s success, ensuring that high-standard healthcare remains a basic, accessible right for everyone in Bangkok.
