Young at Heart: Seniors Spread Radiant Smiles at the Bueng Sakae Ngam Fun Games

On February 26, 2026, the Bueng Sakae Ngam Elderly Care Home in Khlong Sam Wa District transformed into a theater of joy as the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) launched the “Relations Building Sports Competition for Senior Citizens”. Mr. Thanit Tanbuaklee, Deputy Permanent Secretary for the BMA set a refreshing tone during the opening ceremony, reminding participants and spectators alike that the day was not about the pressure of winning or losing, but about “competing for smiles and happiness.” He celebrated the city’s elders as vital repositories of experience and wisdom, emphasizing that the BMA’s mission is to ensure every senior possesses the physical and emotional strength to live a high-quality, vibrant life.

This lively festival showcased a successful public-private partnership, organized through a collaboration between the BMA’s Social Development Department and Chersery Home International. Notably, the entire event was fueled by the generosity of partner networks, successfully delivering a high-impact community day without using the BMA’s budget. Approximately 150 spirited participants from various senior clubs, including Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital Senior Citizen Club, the Khlong Sam Wa Public Health Center 64 Senior Citizen Club, Din Daeng Elderly Service Centre, “Bang Khae 2” Home for the Elderly, and the Bueng Sakae Ngam Elderly Care Home, gathered to swap the quiet of home for the camaraderie found on the field. The initiative specifically aims to keep seniors active and socially connected, reducing the risks of being homebound while fostering a sense of unity through constructive, healthy competition.

The atmosphere remained electric from the early morning, featuring a colorful senior parade and high-energy cheerleading squads that would put younger athletes to shame. Activities ranged from land and water netball to various fun-filled sports that allowed everyone to momentarily forget their age. Attended by the Director-General of the BMA Social Development Department and various healthcare representatives, the event proved that seniority is not a limitation but a vibrant life force. The infectious laughter and radiant smiles shared across the field served as a powerful reminder that, with the right community support, the golden years can truly be a period of boundless happiness and shared vitality.
