Bangkok X Netherlands: Governor Chadchart Scales Dutch Water Innovations for a Resilient Capital

On February 12, 2026, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, led a high-level delegation to the Netherlands to bridge the gap between rapid urban growth and the escalating climate crisis. Meeting in Delft with Deltares, a world-renowned water research institute, the Governor explored sophisticated solutions tailored for Bangkok’s lowland topography. The discussions centered on three breakthrough innovations: the “Sand Motor” for natural coastal defense, the AI-powered SFINCS model for predicting complex compound flooding, and a digital Climate Resilient Toolbox. These tools are designed to replace traditional trial-and-error infrastructure with data-driven, nature-based strategies that can simulate disaster scenarios before they strike, ensuring the city is prepared for the volatile interplay of heavy rainfall and rising tides.

The delegation’s study continued in Utrecht, a city that has successfully reversed decades of car-centric “grey infrastructure” by converting highways back into historic canals. The Catharijnesingel restoration serves as a blueprint for Bangkok, showcasing how clean, high-quality waterways can mitigate the urban heat island effect while providing recreational spaces for the public. This shift toward “green and blue” infrastructure is already taking root in Thailand through the Partners for International Business (PIB) and Water as Leverage projects. Governor Chadchart has directed a comprehensive approach to canal development, focusing on two strategic pilot areas: Khlong Chong Nonsi, which serves as a “quick-win” model for immediate urban improvement, and Khlong Saen Saep, which is earmarked for long-term sustainable restoration. By integrating Dutch expertise in wastewater management and urban design, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration aims to transform its canal network from simple drainage systems into clean, vibrant social hubs that enhance the quality of life for all residents.
