BMA and Denmark Unite to Pioneer Sustainable Waste Management Model for Bangkok Condominiums

On February 10, 2026, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) joined forces with Danish environmental experts at the Danish Ambassador’s Residence to advance a specialized waste-sorting model for high-rise living. This second Project Steering Committee meeting, held under the Thailand-Denmark Strategic Sector Cooperation, focused on transforming how condominiums handle refuse through a circular economy lens. Mr. Pornphrom Vikitsreth, Adviser to Governor of Bangkok and BMA’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized that while the “No Mixed Waste” initiative has garnered significant interest, many condominiums currently lack the concrete, user-friendly implementation guidelines necessary to move from theory to practice. The new collaborative model aims to bridge these operational gaps, fostering a stronger network for food waste management that involves both private partners and the agricultural sector.

To support these practical changes, the BMA is simultaneously modernizing its legal framework to ensure long-term success. Ms. Woranuch Suaykakaow, Director-General of the Environment Department, noted that updates to the BMA ordinance and regulation are underway to permit greater private sector participation in waste collection and disposal. By integrating private expertise, the BMA hopes to increase the speed and comprehensiveness of waste services while significantly reducing the strain on government resources. This systemic shift is designed to make Bangkok’s waste infrastructure more flexible and responsive to the unique challenges of modern urban density.

The ongoing pilot project, which targets ten diverse condominiums in the Khlong Toei and Vadhana districts, serves as the primary testing ground for these strategies. Managed by the BMA, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, and the Thailand Environment Institute, the initiative is scheduled to run through February 2027. Mr. Panuwat Onthes, Director of Solid Waste Management Strategy Office, highlighted that source segregation is the vital link to minimizing contamination and maximizing the recycling potential of urban waste. Ultimately, the BMA intends to scale the successful results of this pilot across all 50 districts of Bangkok and the broader ASEAN region, setting a new international standard for sustainable urban waste management and public environmental awareness.
