Strengthening Urban Resilience: BMA Taps Chula Expertise for School Earthquake Early-Warning Grid

(January 29, 2026) Assoc. Prof. Tavida Kamolvej, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, conducted a site visit to the installation site of the “RUKON” earthquake detection sensors. These sensors were developed by the Center of Excellence in Earthquake and Vibration Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, to enhance safety and disaster preparedness in Bangkok. She stated that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) had received ten “RUKON” earthquake intensity warning sensors from the Center of Excellence in Earthquake and Vibration Engineering on December 24, 2025.

These sensors are designated for installation and the expansion of the earthquake monitoring network within the city. Currently, a pilot system has been implemented in two BMA-affiliated schools, namely Wat Suttharam Secondary School, in Khlong San District, and Phra Ram 9 Kanchanaphisek School, in Huai Khwang District. Five sensors have been installed at each school, covering the upper, middle, and lower floors of the buildings. This setup aims to ensure thorough and precise monitoring of building vibration behaviors, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of surveillance, early warning, and assessment of structural impacts. Such improvements will facilitate timely awareness for the public and relevant agencies, ultimately increasing preparedness and reducing potential risks to both infrastructure and citizens in Bangkok.

Subsequently, the Deputy Governor participated in an educational activity focused on earthquake awareness for students. This event featured demonstrations of earthquake preparedness techniques, highlighting the “Drop, Cover, Hold On” principle. This includes seeking shelter under a sturdy table, protecting the head and neck, and firmly holding onto the table legs until shaking ceases. It was emphasized that individuals should avoid using elevators and should utilize fire escapes if they are inside a building. If outside, individuals are advised to seek refuge in an open area, away from power poles and other structures.
