“Responsible Pet Ownership”: BMA Offers Free Microchipping and Registration for Dogs and Cats Before New Ordinance Takes Effect in 2027

(January 24, 2026) Assoc. Prof. Tavida Kamolvej, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, visited a mobile veterinary unit at Benchakitti Park today to spearhead the BMA’s “Responsible Pet Ownership” campaign. The initiative offers free rabies vaccinations, microchipping, and registration for dogs and cats, aiming to create a “digital identity” for the city’s pets before a new Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Ordinance takes full effect on January 10, 2027. By offering these services early and for free, the BMA aims to foster a “Livable City” where pets and owners are integrated into a safe, organized community.

While enforcement of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Ordinance on the Control of Animal Keeping or Release, B.E. 2567 (2024) was recently extended to allow residents more time to comply, the BMA is proactively expanding its reach. The city has increased its permanent veterinary clinics from eight to ten and is deploying mobile units across all 50 districts, specifically targeting high-density areas like condominiums and shopping malls. To encourage registration, the BMA is also reviewing and easing restrictive regulations, such as the requirement for landlord confirmation documents.

Deputy Governor Tavida emphasized that microchipping is about “peace of mind” rather than just regulation. The procedure allows for the immediate identification of lost pets and provides owners with official proof of ownership. The BMA assures that the process is safe and performed by professional veterinarians. Furthermore, the system is inclusive of Bangkok’s international community; pets microchipped abroad can be scanned and integrated into the local registry without issue.
