Unplug at Benchakitti: BMA Invites Citizens to Switch Off Signals for “Reading in the Park”

(January 24, 2026) Mr. Sanon Wangsrangboon, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, officially launched “Reading in the Park EP3” at Benchakitti Park, marking the third year of the initiative designed to foster a quiet, offline community in the heart of the city. Organized by the Bangkok Literature and Arts Festival, participants are encouraged to disconnect from social media and spend an hour reading physical books or e-readers in a communal setting. By encouraging participants to switch their phones to airplane mode and engage in small post-reading discussions, this program aims to replicate successful “offline club” trends seen in major global cities.

In addition to promoting literacy, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is leveraging this initiative to spearhead the development of a dedicated “Book District” in Bangkok. Drawing inspiration from famous literary landmarks like Tokyo’s Jimbocho, the BMA is collaborating with the Creative Economy Agency (CEA), the Office of Knowledge Management and Development (OKMD), and the Publishers and Distributors Association of Thailand (PUBAT). This partnership seeks to unite independent bookstores and publishers, revitalizing existing urban resources and positioning the city as a regional hub for literature and creative arts.

Deputy Governor Sanon underscored the importance of such events for invigorating public parks. He asserted that the BMA is committed to supporting similar grassroots initiatives across all green spaces throughout the capital. The subsequent “Reading in the Park” session is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Rommaninat Park in Phra Nakhon District. The event will take place from 16.00 to 18.00 hrs., and is conveniently accessible via the MRT Sam Yot station, providing citizens with another opportunity to exchange digital signals for print literature in a tranquil outdoor setting.
