184 markets in Bangkok join in “waste separation” by separating 75 tons of food scraps per day and reducing carbon equivalent to 1,183 Bangkok-Chiang Mai flights.

 

Mr. Aekvarunyoo Amrapala, BMA Spokesperson and Assistant Secretary to the Governor of Bangkok, revealed the success of waste management in the markets, saying that currently, 184 markets are participating in the project with 50 district offices.
It can separate up to 75 tons of food scraps per day. Such waste is managed using the following methods:
1. The source of waste management through direct delivery to farmers is 36.6 tons/day or 49%.
2. The district office receives waste for fertilizer which is 22.3 tons/day or 30%.
3. The source of waste management by making fertilizer is 5.6 tons/day or 7%.
4. The district office takes waste through animal feed is 5.1 tons/day or 7%.
5. Others are 4.9 tons/day or 7%.

“If we compare this success, the amount of food scraps that can be separated is 75 tons/day, which is equivalent to reducing the carbon footprint or carbon dioxide emissions by 142.5 tons/day or equal to the energy required for 1,183 Bangkok-Chiang Mai flights.”
