Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, spoke about the origins of organizing the Earth Hour 2024 activity and how global warming is already happening and is really near us. The main cause of global warming is the release of greenhouse gases. The main causes of greenhouse gas emissions come from two main causes. The first is energy use, whether it be energy in various buildings. The second is the engine that emits carbon dioxide. We must work together to campaign to raise awareness of reducing global warming.
Earth Hour activity is to join forces to turn off unnecessary lights and unplug all electrical appliances to reduce energy use of all types for 1 hour. Bangkok joined more than 7,000 cities around the world to symbolically turn off their lights simultaneously on Saturday, 23 March 2024 from 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. local time in each city. Results of Earth Hour activities in 2023 from calculations by the Metropolitan Electricity Authority reveal that the Bangkok area can reduce electricity use by up to 36 megawatts and reduce carbon dioxide by approximately 5.2 tons. However, the main factor is probably not the amount of carbon dioxide that is reduced but rather raising everyone’s awareness of the importance of protecting the world and reducing global warming. The world is our home.
“Bangkok invites everyone to help each other on Saturday, March 23 from 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. by turning off lights, and various electrical appliances and unplugging plugs to make us aware and alert to reducing the production of greenhouse gases, which is a major cause of global warming,” the governor said.
To campaign and encourage everyone to see the importance and join together in reducing unnecessary energy use in 2024, the World-Wide Fund for Nature – WWF has announced Saturday, 23 March 2024, as the event day for Earth Hour 2024. Bangkok has joined the public and private sector networks to jointly campaign to reduce global warming continuously. On this occasion, I would like to invite everyone to turn off unnecessary lights, unplug electrical appliances, and reduce energy use of all types for 1 hour simultaneously around the world in more than 7,000 cities and 190 countries to reduce global warming in 2024.
