Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok has welcomed Mr. Andrea Marcon, Honorary Consul to Venice, Republic of Italy, to discuss the progress in establishing the sister cities between Bangkok and Venice, Republic of Italy at Amonphiman Room, Bangkok City Hall (Sao Chingcha), Phra Nakhon District.

Today’s discussions pushed for the establishment of a sister city between Bangkok and Venice, Republic of Italy. As well as holding a signing ceremony of the agreement to establish the sister cities of the two cities in Venice, Republic of Italy, because Bangkok and Venice are cities that have many similar characteristics. Thailand is an important friendly country of the Italian Republic. The operation is to be completed within 2024.

The Honorary Consul in Venice informed that the Mayor of Venice has issued a letter inviting the Governor of Bangkok to visit Venice to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the death of Marco Polo, the great Italian merchant and explorer, and Pioneer of the Silk Road

Venice is a port city of the Italian Republic. During the reign of King Chulalongkorn, he traveled to Europe by boat, docking at the port of this city. Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya has often visited Venice. Venice is also a city of art and tourism. About 18 million tourists visit each year. In 2009 and 2019, Venice held the Venice Biennale and celebrated various festivals and had a floating market which is an important tourist attraction similar to the floating market in Thailand. 

On this occasion, the Governor of Bangkok presented two volumes of the book “BANGKOK SHOPHOUSES, Bangkok Shophouses and Neighborhood Life” to the Honorary Consul in Venice as souvenirs.
