Thai Government and BMA Forge Strategic Alliance to Drive Urban Development and Public Welfare Initiatives

On July 13, 2026, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, and Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, announced a powerful collaborative partnership between the national government and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) following the inaugural session of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council. This high-profile synergy aims to accelerate essential urban development policies and systematically enhance the overall quality of life for Bangkok residents. Under this unified framework, the national government will actively support the BMA across multiple public utility fronts, with key initiatives targeting public safety, transportation efficiency, flood mitigation, traffic congestion, and PM2.5 air pollution control.

To streamline city commuting, the government is set to fast-track the implementation of a unified common ticketing system for road, rail, and water transit networks. Facilitated by the newly approved Joint Ticket Management Act B.E. 2568 (2025) and the Railway Transport Act B.E. 2568 (2025), the integrated ticketing service is slated to launch by the end of this year as a New Year’s gift to the public, capping maximum fares at 45 baht per trip with a one-time entry fee waiver. Additionally, the government and the BMA will repurpose underutilized land owned by state enterprises, such as the State Railway of Thailand, the Expressway Authority of Thailand, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand, and the Treasury Department, to create public parks, sports grounds, community activity zones, and retail spaces for small-scale vendors to generate local employment opportunities.

During the joint address, Prime Minister Anutin also detailed immediate state interventions regarding a recent tragic fire at a commercial establishment near Lat Phrao Intersection. Accompanied by Governor Chadchart during a late-night site evaluation, the Prime Minister confirmed 27 fatalities and assured that all injured victims had been hospitalized under state-sponsored protection schemes, with dedicated relief funds mobilized to support the victims’ families. The Forensic Science Division and police investigators are currently conducting a rigorous investigation into the fire’s origin, building code compliance, and allegations of locked fire exits, with the Prime Minister promising strict legal enforcement without exception. While licensed as a restaurant with live music, the establishment was not a registered entertainment venue, prompting deeper regulatory audits of commercial safety standards citywide.
