On June 10, 2026, Dr. Lertluck Leelaruangsang, Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), welcomed 69 student ambassadors from Kasetsart University (KU Student Ambassador Batch 8) at Bangkok City Hall, Sao Chingcha. Led by Assistant Professor Dr. Supapatpimol Simlee, Assistant to the President for International Affairs, the study visit focused on the BMA International Affairs Office’s core operations under the theme of city diplomacy, inter-city relations, and Bangkok’s evolving role on the global stage. The initiative serves as a core component of Kasetsart University’s 2026 workshop aimed at strengthening global competencies, preparing students to represent their institution in international arenas, and acting as cultural ambassadors for Thailand.
In addressing prevalent misconceptions regarding the disconnect between international relations and local governance, Dr. Lertluck elucidated the direct correlation between global affairs and the daily functioning of urban life. She underscored that significant enhancements in urban infrastructure, such as low-floor electric buses designed for improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities, modernized waste management systems implemented in public parks, and sophisticated flood warning mechanisms, often originate from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s international team. This team collaborates with partner cities worldwide to identify and adapt leading-edge innovations. Dr. Lertluck articulated that city diplomacy transcends mere formal welcome ceremonies; it serves as an essential conduit for integrating global solutions into Bangkok, thereby establishing international benchmarks for local public services.
To achieve the overarching goal of making Bangkok a livable city for all, the BMA actively leverages knowledge from international networks across multiple operational dimensions. This includes implementing source-reduction waste models, exchanging advanced medical expertise, and integrating water management technologies to build resilience against climate change. Concluding her address, the Deputy Permanent Secretary encouraged the student ambassadors to view their developing communication skills as powerful tools for driving urban transformation. Reaffirming the BMA’s commitment to youth development, she praised the next generation as the city’s most vital resource for future development and stated that Bangkok remains fully prepared to support their creative potential.
