Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, joined high-level diplomats on May 12, 2026, to inaugurate the “Trait d’Union – Thailand and France: From Daily Life to Lasting Ties” photography exhibition, marking a historic 170 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Held at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), the event was presided over by Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, alongside Mr. Jean-Claude Pointeuf, the French Ambassador to Thailand. The exhibition serves as a visual testament to the deep-rooted cultural exchange that has flourished since the mid-19th century, highlighting the “hyphen” or trait d’union that bridges the gap between Eastern and Western traditions.

During the ceremony, Governor Chadchart reflected on the tangible French influence woven into the fabric of the Thai capital, pointing to the Parisian-inspired architecture of Ratchadamnoen Road and the enduring educational legacy of the Alliance Française. He emphasized that the showcased photographs are more than mere aesthetics; they serve as a vital record of shared human experiences, ranging from culinary fusion to architectural mimicry and the simple, universal language of a smile. By capturing these everyday intersections, the project illustrates how institutional diplomacy has successfully translated into a genuine people-to-people connection over the decades.
The collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the French Embassy, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration also recognized artistic talent through a photography contest award ceremony. These winning entries offer unique, modern perspectives on how the Franco-Thai bond continues to evolve in the 21st century. As the city looks toward a future of even closer cooperation, the public is invited to explore this free exhibition on the third floor of the BACC. The collection will remain on display through May 24, 2026, offering visitors a chance to witness the enduring “hyphen” that connects these two distinct yet harmoniously linked cultures.
