Thung Khru District Leads Bangkok’s Sustainability Drive with Model Waste Hubs and Urban Cooling Sanctuaries

On March 20, 2026, Mr. Chakkaphan Phewngam, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, conducted a comprehensive inspection of Thung Khru District, highlighting the “SAFETist Farm” as a premier model for community-based waste management. This four-rai enterprise successfully separates organic, recyclable, and hazardous waste, significantly reducing the burden on city services by composting 300 kg of organic material monthly. The Deputy Governor praised the farm’s efficiency, noting that such diligent sorting is now more rewarding than ever following the October 2025 waste fee reform. Under this system, residents using the BKK WASTE PAY app can see their monthly garbage fees slashed from 60 baht to 20 baht, provided their household data is fully verified. He instructed district officials to expedite this verification process so that eco-conscious residents do not miss out on these significant cost savings.

The visit also focused on mitigating the severe seasonal heat through the expansion of the “BKK Cooling” network. At the Wisetsuk Nakhon Village, a new cooling spot within a 15-minute park offers residents a shaded refuge under a dense tree canopy, complete with drinking water and medical supplies. This is complemented by a climate-controlled BKK Cooling Center at the Thung Khru District Office, specifically designed to protect vulnerable groups like the elderly and children. To sustain this cooling effect, the district is aggressively pursuing a goal of ten “15-Minute Parks,” identifying new plots of land near schools and temples to ensure every resident has access to green space within a short walk of their home.

To maintain urban order, Deputy Governor Chakkaphan ordered a strict crackdown on illegal dumping, particularly in Soi Pracha Uthit 76. He mandated that private landowners fence off vacant lots and directed City Law Enforcement to conduct continuous patrols to deter the disposal of construction debris. Furthermore, the district is modernizing its local economy by consolidating street vendors into organized Hawker Centers. By replacing disorganized sidewalk stalls with these regulated trading hubs, Thung Khru is improving pedestrian safety and public hygiene while supporting local livelihoods. This multi-faceted strategy underscores the BMA’s commitment to a cleaner, cooler, and more organized capital for all residents.
