Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, officially inaugurated the “BKK Cooling Centers” initiative today, March 16, 2026, unveiling 304 designated heat-relief rooms designed to protect citizens from the city’s increasingly severe summer temperatures. During a press conference at the Thewet Recreation Center, the Governor explained that these shelters are a vital lifeline for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, and outdoor laborers, who may lack access to climate-controlled environments as heat indexes soar. By repurposing existing air-conditioned spaces within district offices, public health centers, and eventually 100 schools, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is providing a cost-effective refuge where residents can rest, hydrate, and escape the peak solar intensity typically felt between 10.00 and 15.00 hrs.
The BMA’s strategy emphasizes both accessibility and environmental responsibility, ensuring that the operation of these centers aligns with national energy conservation goals. Rather than installing new cooling units, the city is utilizing current infrastructure and optimizing existing air conditioning to maximize public health benefits without a massive spike in electricity consumption. Beyond the 304 indoor rooms, the city has established 178 outdoor “Cooling Spots” in public parks and deployed over 2,800 clean drinking water stations throughout the capital. For those in underserved neighborhoods, the BMA has also proactively distributed 16,000 cooling fans and medical supplies to ensure that heat relief is equitably distributed across the city.
To keep the public informed, the BMA has introduced a four-level Heat Index alert system, ranging from a “Green” monitoring level to an “Extremely Dangerous” red alert for when the index exceeds 52°C. Residents are encouraged to monitor these real-time conditions via the AirBKK application or the Greener Bangkok website, which also features an interactive map of the nearest cooling stations and water points. Governor Chadchart noted that this model mirrors global climate adaptation strategies, transforming the city’s administrative buildings into community sanctuaries that prioritize human safety and quality of life during the most punishing months of the year.
