BMA Inspections: Addressing Sidewalk Encroachment and Sanitation Issues in Phaya Thai

On February 3, 2026, Mr. Chakkaphan Phewngam, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, led a surprise inspection across five key locations in the Phaya Thai District to address ongoing concerns related to sidewalk encroachment and poor sanitation. Accompanied by the City Law Enforcement Department, the Deputy Governor visited high-traffic sites, including Din Daeng Road, Phahon Yothin Sois 7 and 9, Saliratthawiphak Road, and Pradiphat Road. These unannounced inspections were strategically organized to capture the actual conditions of the city’s commercial areas, following numerous public complaints submitted via the Traffy Fondue system regarding goods obstructing walkways and food spills hindering pedestrian traffic.

The inspection revealed significant violations at several locations, particularly at the entrance of Soi Phahon Yothin 9. There, made-to-order food vendors were found placing tables and chairs well beyond designated limits, while food scraps and grease were being disposed of directly into the public drainage system. On Saliratthawiphak Road, the inspection team noted that large tarpaulins intended for shade were extending onto the roadway, thereby posing a potential hazard to motorists. Similarly, along Pradiphat Road, many of the 67 active vendors had allowed their stalls to exceed permitted boundaries, further congesting the pedestrian pathways.

In response to these findings, Deputy Governor Chakkaphan issued a firm directive requiring vendors to maintain strict sanitary standards and ensure that no oil stains or waste are left behind after closing. He emphasized that the district would initiate a crackdown on mobile vendors and street vendors with motorcycle sidecar stalls that park illegally along the roadside. To offer a sustainable long-term solution, the BMA is collaborating with the Government Savings Bank and the SME Bank to establish “Hawker Centers.” These dedicated spaces are intended to relocate vendors into standardized and regulated environments, ensuring that the public can reclaim the sidewalks while local commerce continues to thrive in an orderly manner.
