Governor Chadchart Credits Burning Ban and Better Ventilation for Bangkok’s Clearer Skies

On February 4, 2026, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, reported a positive trend in the city’s air quality, announcing that PM2.5 levels remain largely in the “green” or “good” zone. During a visit to the Bangkok Air Quality Information Center in Din Daeng, the Governor attributed the clear skies to excellent atmospheric ventilation experienced earlier in the week. While a slight accumulation of dust was anticipated for the afternoon and evening, leading to potential “yellow” or “orange” levels, forecasts indicate that ventilation will improve again tomorrow and remain favorable throughout the week.

A significant factor contributing to this improvement is the nationwide ban on agricultural burning implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, which runs from February 1st to March 31st, 2026. While neighboring countries continue to face severe burning issues, Bangkok has remained shielded by favorable wind directions that have prevented smoke from entering the metropolitan area. The reduction in domestic hotspots has been substantial, contributing to a much cleaner environment compared to previous years.

Data from the beginning of 2026 reveals a dramatic improvement over the same period in 2025. Specifically, the number of days where PM2.5 exceeded standard levels has dropped from 22 days to just 12, marking a 45% decrease. Furthermore, the average PM2.5 concentration has fallen by 22%, from 48.4 to 37.6 µg/m³. The number of detected burning points has also seen a significant 40% reduction, dropping from over 5,000 in 2025 to 3,163 this year. Governor Chadchart expressed optimism that with continued cooperation from all sectors and the arrival of southerly winds toward the end of the month, the city is on the right track to concluding this year’s dust season successfully.
