Green Light for Bangkok: City Hall and Google Deploy AI Traffic Management to Cut Congestion and PM2.5

(May 26, 2025) —New ‘Project Green Light’ utilises Big Data and artificial intelligence to optimise traffic flow at over 50 junctions, aiming for significant reductions in vehicle stops and emissions.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has teamed up with Google to launch “Project Green Light,” an ambitious initiative designed to enhance traffic light management at junctions across the capital and reduce PM2.5 fine dust pollution from the transport sector.

The project officially commenced operations in February 2025.

Under this collaboration, Google is leveraging its Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to analyse real-time driving behaviour. This analysis informs recommendations for optimal traffic light timings, adapting to dynamic road conditions throughout the day.

This intelligent system is projected to reduce vehicle stops on roads by up to 30%, alleviate stop-and-go congestion, and significantly improve overall travel fluidity.

So far, traffic light timings have been adjusted at over 50 junctions across Bangkok. The project also anticipates a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 10% as a direct result of smoother traffic flow.

Furthermore, the BMA is utilising Probe Data, gathered from movement tracking devices such as mobile phone GPS, to analyse Origin-Destination (O/D) patterns of journeys.

This data is being applied to manage traffic issues, including adjusting traffic light patterns or managing lane allocation at major junctions. This particular application has already been piloted in key areas, including Ratchathewi Junction, Rama 9 Junction, and Taksin Bridge.

“The BMA is genuinely committed to using technology to make daily commutes smoother for our citizens,” stated Aekvarunyoo Amrapala, spokesperson for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. “We are employing Big Data and AI to help adjust traffic signals to real traffic conditions. If residents still encounter problems in any area, we urge them to report it via Traffy Fondue so we can address the issue directly.”
