The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has vowed to continue projects under the “illuminating Bangkok” campaign, saying that ensuring safety for Bangkokians after dark is one of its top priorities.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt told the meeting of BMA executives at the City Hall on Monday that an initial survey had counted 390,000 lampposts along public roads and canals throughout the city.
So far, 153,891 lampposts have been registered on the BMA Street Light platform, which provides location via the GPS system so the city can map out areas that are still lacking illumination.
This leaves some 236,000 lampposts that the city still needs to register in order to implement its plan efficiently, he said.
Chadchart also reported that this year the BMA has fixed 26,872 damaged or out-of-order lampposts. In the first half of July alone, a total of 1,766 posts were fixed in Nong Chok, Khlong Sam Wa, Lat Krabang, Prawet, Saphan Sung and Saimai districts. Some 420 posts are still out of order in these areas but should be working again by the end of July, he added.
As for the project of changing street lamps to LED lamps with Internet of Things (IOT) communication functions, Chadchart said so far 5,198 LED lamps of 120 watts have been installed on 47 public roads, and over 18,900 LED lamps of 50 watts on sois throughout 50 districts, nearly achieving the target of 20,190 lamps in community areas.
Chadchart said next year the BMA will install 30,000 more IOT-capable LED lamps to ensure that all areas of the city are properly illuminated while also providing a comprehensive smart communication network.
The governor tasked the district offices and the Department of Drainage and Sewerage with fixing 2,027 out-of-order street lamps by the Saen Saeb, Bang Lamphu and Ong Ang canals by the end of this year.
He said the BMA will also procure 2,225 more lamp posts for canal-side areas, 1,683 of which will be under the responsibility of district offices for installation and maintenance, while 542 will be under the Department of Drainage and Sewerage.
