The capital’s first 100% eco-friendly café has just popped up at Benjakitti Forest Park. But people must hurry, because it’s serving beverages only until September 24.
Powered by Banpu NEXT, the pop-up Infinite Café was opened on Monday by Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt.
During the ceremony, Chadchart invited Bangkokians to enjoy delicious coffee that is brewed using net-zero emission techniques.
The café is open daily from 7am to 1pm.
The project was initiated by Banpu NEXT and Roots, who implemented clean energy solutions under the concept, “A cup to net-zero emission”. The aim of the project is to show people that everybody can contribute to a low-carbon society with something as small as drinking a cup of coffee.
The cafe is 100% off-grid, using only electricity produced by solar panels on its roof and stored in its built-in battery. It also employs digital technology in energy management and waste disposal, and provides an electric tuk-tuk shuttle service run under the “MuvMi” app to visitors of Benjakitti Forest Park.
According to Banpu NEXT, Thais on average drink 300 cups of coffee each per year, and each cup produces about 300 grams of carbon dioxide. This means each year some 15 million tonnes of carbon is released and it would take 752 million trees to offset this emission.
As a first step to tackle this problem, Banpu NEXT designed Infinite Café – Thailand’s first 100% clean energy café. Apart from using renewable energy in all steps of operation, the café also uses locally grown beans so carbon from transportation can be cut by 75%, oat milk which has 72% less emission rate and plant-based fibre cups that help cut emission by 72%.
