Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has urged people to clean roads near their residences to make the capital cleaner.
He made the remark during the “Big Cleaning Day” activity from Bang Sue Metropolitan Police Station to the Lat Phrao intersection in Chatuchak district on Saturday.
The activity was a cooperation among seven Bangkok district offices — Chatuchak, Bang Khen, Bang Sue, Sai Mai, Lak Si, Don Muang and Lat Phrao.
“I would like to ask people to clean the roads in front of their houses for at least 10 metres per person,” Chadchart said, adding that Bangkok would become cleaner if people worked together.
He said his participation in the activity made him understand about the issues in Bangkok. He added that water used for cleaning roads came from waterways and wastewater treatment plants.
Chadchart had urged officials to set up signposts in cleaning sites to ensure safety for passers-by. Officials had been instructed to clean small alleys as well.
Meanwhile, Bangkok deputy governor Tavida Kamolvej asked motorists to check their vehicles as many oil stains were found on roads, caused by the vehicle’s exhaust.
Wantanee Wattana, BMA deputy permanent secretary, thanked all participants in the activity, including vendors and motorcycle taxi drivers. She added that the activity in Chatuchak district was only the beginning.
The directors of the seven Bangkok district offices asked people to maintain cleanliness in their area and use public transport instead of personal vehicles.
