Bangkok’s Waste-to-Energy Revolution: On Nut Incineration Plant Hits 86% Completion Ahead of Major March Test

On March 11, 2026, Mr. Chakkaphan Phewngam, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, led a high-level site inspection at the On Nut Refuse Disposal Centre in Prawet District to evaluate the progress of the city’s landmark waste-to-energy incineration plant. Spanning 30 rai, this 1,000-ton-per-day facility represents a core component of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) strategic shift away from traditional landfilling toward sustainable, high-tech waste management. Developed by Newsky Energy (Bangkok) Co., Ltd. under a 20-year Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, the project has reached a critical milestone with 86.89% of construction now complete. This progress includes the completion of the main structure, the installation of specialized grabber cranes, and the successful calibration of the central control systems.

The facility’s advanced technology is designed to process municipal waste through an indoor, closed-system receiving pit that reduces moisture levels before combustion. By utilizing stoker-type incinerators that operate at temperatures between $850$°C and $1,100$°C, the plant will generate high-pressure steam to drive turbines, producing a substantial 30 megawatts of electricity. During the inspection, officials confirmed that the site is rapidly preparing for a major system test on March 20, 2026, which will involve waste-handling trials and wastewater system checks. Deputy Governor Chakkaphan has tasked the Environment Department with rigorous monitoring to ensure the project remains on track for its final completion date in November 2026. This facility not only promises to revolutionize the city’s waste disposal logistics but also contributes significantly to Bangkok’s renewable energy grid. By converting the capital’s daily refuse into a reliable power source, the BMA is demonstrating a clear commitment to environmental health and modern urban management, setting a new standard for sustainable infrastructure in the region.
