Bangkok Beats the Heat: BMA Unveils Comprehensive Cooling Network and Smart Alert System

On March 5, 2026, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, chaired the 3rd BMA executive meeting at City Hall, aimed at expediting the implementation of Bangkok’s heat-relief infrastructure as the region grapples with an exceptionally harsh summer season. Recognizing that urban heat is becoming more severe due to climate change, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched an expansive proactive strategy that transitions from reactive measures to a systematic urban cooling plan. The city has established a vast network of 352 “BKK Cooling Spots” located across 48 major public parks and 200 “15-minute parks,” complemented by 255 “BKK Cooling Centers” housed within schools, vocational centers, and district offices. To safeguard residents from dehydration and heat-related illnesses, the BMA is deploying 2,806 drinking water stations throughout the city, with directives for district offices to prioritize assistance to bedridden patients and other vulnerable populations. Furthermore, Governor Chadchart emphasized the potential for collaboration with the private sector, advocating for convenience store chains and local temples to serve as community refuges, providing shade and hydration.

In addition to these physical cooling measures, the BMA has established a sophisticated four-tier alert system based on the Heat Index. This calculation combines temperature and relative humidity to reflect how hot it actually feels to the human body. This system ranges from a “Green” monitoring level to a “Red” extremely dangerous level, initiated when the Heat Index surpasses 52.0°C, at which point all outdoor activities must be suspended to avert the risk of life-threatening heatstroke. The administration’s holistic approach also encompasses additional summer-related challenges, including an intensified rabies vaccination and sterilization initiative for pets, as well as increased vigilance against grass fires in high-risk areas. By incorporating these public health and safety protocols into a formal 2026 Heat Management Plan, the BMA seeks to transform Bangkok into a resilient city where temperature management is a fundamental indicator of organizational efficacy, thereby ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents during the anticipated peak heat period, expected to last until mid-May.
