(January 30, 2025) Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced that the BMA has successfully implemented the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) measure to reduce PM 2.5 levels in inner Bangkok. The LEZ restricts unregistered trucks with six or more wheels from entering areas within the Ratchadapisek ring road. Only trucks registered as meeting low-emission standards are permitted to enter the inner zone. So far, 38,000 trucks have been certified to meet the required safety standards for entry. Unregistered trucks that enter inner Bangkok will face charges from the BMA.
The governor stated that this initial implementation has allowed the identification of key issues and demonstrated the effectiveness of using technology, He emphasized that the government should consider the LEZ measure when drafting the new national operational plan for addressing PM 2.5.
Governor Chadchart also added that BMA will urge the government to declare Bangkok a pollution control zone, which would allow the BMA to access the fund for promoting environmental quality and improving air quality without requiring prior approval from the central government.
