The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched a data science learning project to promote the use of data analytics for sustainable development.
The “Asean Data Science Explorers BMA” project was launched on Tuesday by deputy governor Sanon Wangsrangboon at Wat Phraya Suren School in Khlong Sam Wa district.
Set up in collaboration with the Asean Foundation and SAP Thailand Ltd, the project aims to improve data analytics skills among students aged 15 to 30 years. The students are expected to use these skills to help solve social and economic problems as well as help achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Students will get an opportunity to hone their analytical and other related skills, like solving problems, communication, and team-building,” Sanon said.
“They will also get to learn about the principles of data analytics and data science that can open up more career opportunities.”
The project, which runs from August until November, will conclude with a competition to select the best users of data science.
The Asean Foundation and SAP have been holding these competitions every year since 2017.
The project was launched on August 8 (Tuesday) to mark the 56th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN.
Some 170 students from five Bangkok schools are expected to compete. The schools are Wat Phraya Suren School (Khlong Sam Wa), Matthayom Naknawaupatham School (Suan Luang), Wat Suttharam High School (Khlong San), Matthayom Puranawas School (Thawee Watthana), and Na Luang School (Thung Khru).
Held under the theme “Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s World”, the competition will focus on solving issues faced by ASEAN communities using tools like SAP’s Analytic Cloud and knowledge of data science.
“Data science is a fast-growing field that has various applications in important issues, from climate change to healthcare,” Sanon said. “As data grows in size and complexity, we will need more data scientists to fully utilise it in tackling key problems at national and regional levels.”
Sanon also said he hopes students participating in the project will gain knowledge and experience from professional data scientists for their personal development, as well as expand it to other schools in the city.
