Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok visited the BKK Food Bank project in Bang Phlat District.
The Governor of Bangkok said Bangkok is a diverse city and has both people with food surplus and food shortages. Bangkok has collected a lot of information and coordinated with these two groups through the establishment of the BKK Food Bank, which is similar to a supermarket. It will be sharing not only food but also clothes, diapers, soap, dishwashing liquid, and various daily necessities. Recipients must be on the list of those in need and vulnerable groups prepared by the district office to identify those who are truly in need and vulnerable groups. Recipients will also have a points collection book to exchange for the right to receive essential items in their daily lives as desired. Bangkok is expanding the BKK Food Bank to cover all 50 districts. In the future, we may also cover victims of accidents and public disasters.
He added that the BMA has emphasized that donations must not be solicitations but must be truly given by those who wish to share. Some people who want to share things don’t know where to take the donated items so that they can truly reach those in need and vulnerable groups. Bangkok intends to act as a coordinator for this point. Sharers can come and give items at the 50 district offices and Bangkok City Hall. This BKK Food Bank has already occurred in many countries around the world, such as the United States. It emphasizes the value and dignity of humanity. Everyone has equal dignity. In addition, fresh food and perishable items can be consumed immediately through delivery systems to communities and into the hands of vulnerable people in line with Bangkok’s waste reduction policy. In this regard, stores, supermarkets, and hotels that participate in food sharing will receive BKK Food Bank stickers to demonstrate their generosity and cooperation with Bangkok. We invite everyone to support shops with these stickers as another way to support BKK Food Bank’s policy to share food with vulnerable groups in the city.
In this regard, the BKK Food Bank project in Bang Phlat District starts on 22 February 2023. There were community development and environmental officers to receive items from 7-11 in 7 areas to distribute to target groups in 48 communities in the Bang Phlat District area. It will circulate among various communities with a total target of 738 people. It also has a 3-day/week food delivery plan: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
For past operations, the Bang Phlat District Office has delivered food 164 times. The total weight of donated food is 2,259.43 kilograms or 9,489.61 meals. There is a reduction in Carbon Footprint or the amount of greenhouse gases equal to 5,716.36 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kgCO2e).
